Time To Shine

Happy Friday, we hope you all have a great weekend and get to recharge the batteries. It seems we could be some time waiting for the sun to shine through so this weekend we're turning our attention to sunny Spain and allowing some of its hidden gems to sparkle.

There's no doubt that Rioja is the most important wine-producing region in Spain. The multitude of different grapes you find here make for some of the most exciting wines in the world. It's exceptionally well known for producing reds and for many Tempranillo is king, but there is so much more to discover!! There are 5 red grapes permitted in DOC Rioja (Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo, Garnacha and Maturana Tinta and also 9 whites, the most imported one is Viura.

Rioja may also be prized for blending different grape varieties, but for wine lovers near and far, some of the most enjoyable and memorable wines are usually single-varietal. This weekend we're giving some of our favourite singles a chance to shine. The usual 10% off 12 or more bottles applies but if you find yourself tempted by all of them that's okay too, we've a special price on Rioja's Finest Singles case.

Cornelio Dinastia Barrel-Fermented Viura

€29.95

Viura is the main white grape grown in Rioja and is prized for producing fruity wines with floral aromas and a remarkable acidity, making it ideal for both young and aged whites. The grapes for this Barrel fermented white came from the best clusters from vines that are over 60 years old and were fermented in new American oak barrels for about 8 months. The result is a multi award-winning smooth, voluptuous wine of fine aromas, with a complex and sweeping palate.

Vega Vella, Garnacha Blanca

€37.95

Garnacha Blanca is the 3rd most planted white grape variety but it occupies the least surface area among authorised Rioja grapes and is known to produce full-bodied wines known for their intense flavours, higher alcohol content, and plush style. This organically farmed single varietal ticks all those boxes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and unctuous. There is a well-balanced acidity that is perfectly offset by the sweetness of the tannins found in this variety.

Vega Vella Tempranillo

€18.95

Considered native to Rioja, Tempranillo is one of the greatest grape varieties in the world and it occupies more than 75% of the vineyards in the region. It is durable and has an array of different styles. From soft and fruity to big and bold it has a style to suit anyone's palate. This Vega Vella Tempranillo has a very notable presence of red fruits, balanced out by good levels of acidity and freshness. It's smooth, dry, and well rounded.

Vega Vella Graciano

€34.95

Graciano is a grape variety native to Rioja and but occupies only 2.1% of the vineyards in the region, it is not widely grown anywhere else. It's not an easy grape to grow and usually plays a supporting role. It's an amazing variety, with balsamic, menthol notes and hints of tea, plenty to get your teeth into. This is an example of textbook Graciano, a powerful wine with noticeable tannins, where you appreciate the oak and the ripe fruit and spicy touches. Its Gold Decanter Medal and many other accolades vouch for that!!

Vega Vella Garnacha Tinta

€28.95

This may be native to Spain but it is also one of the most extensively grown varietals in the world. It's usually used to make good wines great and in Rioja it's used to complement the Tempranillo with it's aromas of freshness. It generally produces aromatic wines that are not very intense in colour but have a high alcohol content and good acidity. This wine will dazzle you with it's delicate yet vibrant red-brick colour, it's fruity aromas, delicate midpalate and a long velvety finish. It represents the authenticity of the garnacha grape from decades ago.

Baron De Ley Varietal Maturana

€23.95

The comeback kid so to speak. Maturana Tinta is a grape variety indigenous to Rioja which is not grown anywhere else in the world. It almost became extinct but was recovered after years of work and research but still only occupies 0.3% of the vineyards. A hidden gem, a grape of surprising elegance! This wine has all the typical characteristics of the grape, it's deep purple in colour, Spicy fruit on the nose, with the presence of balsamic notes. Warm, with silky, velvety tannins, perfectly well integrated. Full-bodied and elegant with a persistent finish.
