About Us

The Corkscrew was originally founded by Peter Foley. The first shop opened in 1978 on Aughrim Street. Peter has worked in the wine trade for over 40 years and in that time he managed the Irish Division of the very prominent Berry Bros and Rudd in Dublins former "Weights & Measures" building. Peter and his son Paul decided to embark on a mission to find their own premises in the heart of Dublin so they could continue to source brilliant wines that people got excited about.

The Corkscrew Wine Merchants established itself at Number 4 Chatham Street on March 24th, 2004. Despite our small space, we prided ourselves on offering a vast selection of high-quality wines emphasising uniqueness and affordability. This led to us gaining the reputation of being “The biggest little wine shop in Dublin”.

Throughout the years The Corkscrew flourished, overcoming challenges like a recession and a pandemic. Our success can be attributed to our lip-smackingly delicious range of wines, top-notch customer service, the profound wine expertise of our dedicated team, and, most importantly, our loyal customers.

In 2018 Paul and Fiona took over the business and steeered it in a new direction. By the end of 2022, it became evident that our humble location could no longer contain our growth; expansion was inevitable. We knew exactly where to turn to make our dream a reality - there was one place that stood out above all others

Constructed in 1880 by the Dublin Corporation Weights and Measures Offices, this iconic structure stands as a significant landmark in Dublin's history. Adorned with a natural slate roof and distinctive red brick facade, the building has not only observed numerous transformations in Ireland's capital but also marked the inception of our wine venture. After nearly two decades, we returned to 4 Harry Street, where our dream had originated. For the moment, it has been expanded to include an extensive selection of spirits, a private tasting cellar which also offers the option of filling and personalising your own whiskey, and, of course, a stunning selection of delectable wines.

Our philosophy has always been to select wines that demonstrate the character and independence that we demand, and wines that deliver quality style and individuality regardless of price. At present we source 40% of our own stock and are proud to deal with small boutique growers who are as passionate about their product as we are. We carry traditional favourites like Bordeaux, Rioja, and Argentinian Malbecs while also showcasing wines from emerging regions such as Slovakia, Uruguay, and China. With a selection spanning over 35 countries, our shelves boast a diverse array of vegan, biodynamic, and natural wines like Pet-nats. For sparkling wine enthusiasts, we take pride in offering the largest Dom Perignon collection in the country along with sparkling gems from Tasmania, South Africa, Luxembourg, and the rising Corpinnat wines from Catalonia. Explore our impressive assortment of sweet stickies and fortified wines as well. Terrific everyday wines, new world icons, established classics - they all have a place on our shelves.

We meticulously taste and handpick each of our spirits to guarantee top-notch quality and value. The Corkscrew prides itself on offering a diverse range from around the globe, including unique spirits not commonly found elsewhere.We have a small selection of whiskeys that are exclusive to us, such as the rare Lambay 20-year-old and the luxurious Shirakawa 1958, the world's rarest whiskey. We regularly have bottles open for tasting allowing you to discover a new liquid love. Our spirits manager will be happy to guide you with the extensive knowledge and experience he has accumulated over more than 20 years.

Our dedicated team of certified sommeliers and our spirit specialists are delighted to assist you in tailoring your event to align with your taste preferences and budget. We provide bespoke private tastings and Masterclasses tailored for all participants. This serves as an excellent opportunity for team-building activities or a unique experience to enjoy with friends or family, combining enjoyment with education on wine or spirits. Our events are delivered in a lively, interactive, and informal manner, requiring no prior experience or knowledge from attendees.
