Barca Velha, which has been in production since 1952, has earned the reputation of being Portugal's most esteemed and highly desired wine. The 2011 vintage is a carefully crafted blend consisting of 45% Touriga Franca, 35% Touriga Nacional, 10% Tinta Roriz, and 10% Tinto Cão. Upon first encountering this wine, one is greeted by an enticing aroma of ripe red and black fruits. As the scent unfolds further, hints of spice such as pepper intertwine with notes of cedar, tobacco, and a subtle touch of minerality. The palate is met with firm yet velvety tannins that harmonize flawlessly with a vibrant acidity. This combination allows for the complex flavors to dance upon the taste buds before leading to an elegantly balanced finish

Casa Ferreirinha, Barca-Velha, Douro, Portugal 2011

Product Description

Founded in 1952, with the production of the first ever vintage of Barca Velha, Casa Ferreirinha pioneered the quality revolution in Douro still wines and was the first producer in the region dedicated entirely to producing wine, rather than port. Named after the legendary Porto matriarch Dona Antónia Ferreira, Casa Ferreirinha pays homage to the memory of this visionary woman. Today, the winemaking is headed up by Luís Sottomayor, who restrains the Douro’s natural exuberance to produce wines that have a vibrant freshness allied to a lovely texture and depth. The 2008 vintage in the Douro was characterised by cooler than average temperatures throughout the growing season and produced wines of great elegance and freshness. The vintage began with a winter which saw lower levels of rain than usual and soil water reserves were replenished later in the year by showers and storms in April and May. These caused some issues with flowering and fruit set and led to a general reduction in yields. Uncharacteristically mild conditions during the summer allowed the grapes to undergo a perfectly paced slow ripening process and the harvest began at the end of August at Quinta da Leda.

Product Reviews

Critics Review

100 Points - Wine Enthusiast This is the latest release of what has long been regarded as Portugal's iconic wine. And it is magnificent. The last vintage was the 2004 and the wait has now shown to be worthwhile. With its immense span and breadth of flavors and rich structure it is a superb manifestation of the great vineyards of the Douro Superior. Big bold fruits and acidity are matched by the tannins and concentration. Hold this for many years or at least wait until 2022.- Roger Voss
