Raul Perez Ultreia St. Jacques 2021
Product Description
'I've always watch the birds carefully: they know which grapes are tastier' - winemaker Raul Perez.
The Latin word “Ultreia” was used to greet the pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago, a word that means “forward“, and, in this way, Raúl Pérez named one of his most well-known and appreciated wine collections.
Wine made primarily with Mencía grapes from the Las Villegas plot in Valtuille de Abajo. The vineyard dates to the end of the 19th century and covers an area of 1.7 hectares, with a density of 4500 vines per hectare, at an altitude of 580 metres. The soil is sandy, and its orientation is south-southeast.
Ultreia is made after harvesting at the end of August or at the beginning of September. Fermentation takes place in open vats with the whole stalk, and, after a maceration time of 60-90 days, it is transferred to second-year French oak barrels. Bottling is carried out without clarifying or filtering the wine.

The clean, oral and 2017 Ultreia Saint Jacques comes mostly from old
vineyards from different soils in Valtuille and Villadecanes fermented in
stainless steel and oak vats with part of full clusters and matured in used
barriques for one year. It's produced in a fresh and very drinkable way. This is
one of the best values from Bierzo and Spain, and a great introduction to
Bierzo. It's a more serious wine than what the wine was when it was first
produced, fresh and elegant. It's very reliable and a great value. There are
some 100,000 bottles that were filled in two production runs.
